Want to try something different with your wig? Here are our top tips!

Congratulations on your new wig – it changes your appearance in seconds and provides comfort and confidence, no matter what is happening in your life.

We love helping clients like you with choosing and styling your wig, with our experienced hairdresser able to thin it out, feather it, or maybe even give it a fringe.

But once you’ve settled into wig life, you may feel like trying some different hairstyles.

Let’s look at a few options that will give you a variety of looks, while also keeping your valuable wig in top condition.

Tips to Help with Styling Your Wig

Use a Mannequin Head to see all angles of the wig as you style. This also helps the wig retain its style after you take it off.
Use a Wide-Tooth Comb to smooth tangles without damaging your wig.
Make Sure Your Wig is Washed.
Dry Your Wig as damp hair is more easily damaged and doesn't hold style as well as dry hair. Air-dry rather than blow-dry if possible.
Use a Heat Protectant Product if using any heated styling devices – and only use products designed specifically for wigs.
Not Too Hot! While many wig manufacturers recommend up to 170 degrees Celsius when using a straightening iron or curler, it’s probably best not to go that high.

Curls and Waves with Heated Styling Tools

We advise using as low a heat as possible to extend the life of your wig.

Section your hair into manageable portions. Even portions equal even curls.

Wrap section around curling wand and hold in place for 10-15 seconds. Release curl and repeat until all sections curled. For the most natural look, alternate the direction of the curls as you go.

Use wide-tooth comb or fingers to fluff curls out into a fuller look. Finish with a light hairspray.

For Heatless Waves

Braid or twist sections of your wig and secure the ends. The tighter the braid or twist, the more defined the wave. Flexi rods can also be used and are great for achieving bouncy curls.

Leave in overnight for most dramatic effect.

Put your hair UP!

Many wigs have a lace front which ensures a natural-looking hairline. You can experiment with side, middle and even zigzag parts, and use clips to pin hair up or away from your face.

With any kind of updo, including a simple ponytail, consider leaving a few strands of hair loose around your face to hide the wig edge completely.

Braids - wear them loose and romantic. There are many options including fishtails.

Top knot – the classic messy bun is perfect for keeping hair out of your face. Secure a high ponytail with an elastic. Then, twist your hair into a rope and wrap it around the base of the ponytail. Secure the ends underneath the bun with bobby pins.

Updo Hairstyles

With the help of hair elastics, bobby pins and the right hairspray there are many gorgeous styles that you can achieve. But NEVER EVER use rubberised elastic in your wig or natural hair as it will break the hair strands - use soft covered hair elastics, that are designed not to damage the hair.

Will your wig stand up to the rigours of beach or pool?

We generally don’t recommend swimming in your wig or hair topper – read on to find out the reasons why …

Beach, sun, sand, swimming… there are so many great things about summer. But if you’re amongst the millions of people worldwide who wear a wig, you may be wondering if you can swim in it?

The short answer is, we don’t recommend it.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun in the sun at the pool or beach, while looking and feeling your fabulous self!

Why Can’t I Swim in my Wig?

While some wigs claim to be waterproof, the reality is that salt water and pool chemicals can rob your wig of its lustre, leaving it brittle and dry, or even alter the hair colour.

For these reasons, we suggest:

That if you do wear your wig when swimming, ideally use an old or spare one – and don’t immerse it under water.
Consider an alternative for swimming, such as a scarf or stylish turban swim cap .

Can you Swim in a Synthetic Wig?

The same applies for both human hair and synthetic wigs: We advise that you don’t go underwater in it. However, for a day at the beach or pool, a synthetic wig could be the better option, for two reasons:

They’re generally less expensive than human hair wigs – an important consideration given the risk of damage.
While human hair lightens, or oxidises, in the sun, this is less likely to be a problem for synthetic wigs.

Just remember that no wig is going to stand up to the rigours of the surf!

Tips for Beach Days and Pool Days:

If you do wear a wig, a grip band or external head band may provide extra security.
Style your wig in a ponytail, bun, or braid to prevent damage or tangling from the wind.
Spray on a leave-in conditioner or protective spray designed especially for wigs.
Consider wearing a hat magic (synthetic hairpiece designed specifically to sit under a hat or scarf) with a baseball cap – and yes, we stock these at our Brisbane wig store.
Finger style your wig’s hair as you exit the water, to ensure the front is in place and the hair is covering the cap’s front.
Always wear a hat when out of the water to protect your wig from the sun.

After Care

Even if you haven’t taken a dip in your wig, we recommend using wig-specific products to wash and condition it as soon as possible. Then, gently pat dry with a towel, allowing it to air dry naturally.

A good quality deep conditioning treatment specifically designed for wigs, will help keep your locks soft, manageable, and damage-free.

A fascinating look at the history of the wig ...

From ancient civilisations to the glamorous courts of Europe, to enhancing confidence and comfort for people experiencing illness – wigs have held a prominent place in fashion, culture, wellbeing, and even societal norms.

Ancient Origins

The Egyptians, known for their advanced understanding of cosmetics and personal grooming, were among the earliest to adopt wigs as a part of daily life from around 3400 BC.

Predominantly worn by the elite, these early wigs were crafted from human hair, sheep’s wool, and plant fibres, and usually attached with beeswax or resin.

Not only were they a symbol of status and fashion, but they were also practical - offering protection from the sun and insects. This dual purpose came in handy because shaven scalps were a sign of nobility!

The tradition of wig-wearing took off in ancient Rome and Greece too. Again, these wigs were associated with power, prestige, and authority, and were often made from the hair of slaves. The Roman emperors were known to don elaborate wigs to help project an image of grandeur.

Wigs in European History

As Europe transitioned into the Middle Ages, wigs fell out of favour. However, they experienced a revival during the 16 ^th Century, thanks to Queen Elizabeth I of England. The Queen is credited with popularising wigs in the European courts, with her signature, tightly curled red wig becoming an iconic symbol of her reign.

In the 17th century, King Louis XIII of France became one of the first high profile men to wear a wig. From a young age he wore a shoulder-length black wig for public appearances. Initially it was to disguise his baldness, but it soon became a status symbol among the French nobility.

Louis XIII’s son, King Louis XIV, took the tradition even further, donning long, full-bottomed wigs of tight curls. It’s believed the king employed 48 wigmakers in his staff. Their elaborate coiffures were sometimes so high and ornate that they required internal structures to support them!

From here, wigs became popular in both men’s and women’s fashion across Europe and colonial America. They were typically made of human hair donated by women in poor communities, with the wigs styled in intricate curls, rolls, and braids.

Common Causes of Female Hair Loss

If you’re losing more hair than usual, it could be due to one of the following reasons:

Pregnancy and Postpartum Hair Loss. During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations can lead to thicker, fuller hair. However, after childbirth, a sudden drop in hormone levels can trigger significant hair shedding. Fortunately, this is usually temporary.

There’s a reason human hair wigs offer the most natural-looking and authentic feel, and that’s because it’s from … well, humans! But how does it make its way to you, and who could it be from?

Why 100% human hair?

Many people are drawn to real hair wigs because of their realistic appearance and the ability to closely match their own hair’s unique texture, colour and quality.

The reason the options are so diverse is that real wig hair comes from people in many different parts of the world, including Europe, South America, Asia, and even Australia!

And because it’s human hair, it can be curled, straightened, or dyed to match a person’s natural hair.

It has to be said however that real hair wigs are far more costly than the synthetic kind.

Where could the real hair in my wig be from?

It could come from virtually any corner of the globe! Human hair can be sold by individuals directly to hair traders, auctioned online, collected from hairdressers, or even donated.

Some examples include:

India. We all know India is a deeply religious country, but did you know each year, millions of Hindus sacrifice their hair to the Gods? Predominantly women and children have their heads shaved in beautiful temple ceremonies known as ‘tonsuring.’ Afterwards, the hair is collected, cleaned, and sorted and then exported overseas to be crafted into human hair wigs. The temples use the money earned through this trade for charitable work, schools, and maintaining the temple grounds.

Europe. Light European hair is highly sought after by wigmakers. It’s the rarest, most expensive option, given how easy it is to treat the naturally light colour with hair dye. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus are the most common origins, with wig manufacturers purchasing and collecting directly from donors.

Brazil. Brazilian hair is known for its stunning volume, natural shine, thickness and strength. It’s generally collected from women in small, rural villages who are paid for their silky, natural, “virgin” hair (meaning it’s never been through any kind of chemical process, including hair dye, perm, or excessive blow drying or heat styling).

China. The Chinese are known for straight, dark, silky, healthy hair that is lightweight and easy to style. It’s usually more affordable as it’s widely available. It can be freshly cut ponytails from donors, but often it is hair accumulated over time in the home, or from hairdressers and sold directly to hair traders.

And… horse hair? Horse hair (as well as hair from sheep, yaks or goats) is often harvested humanely to create specialty wigs, such as those for costumes, theatre, and even judges! If you’ve invested in a wig, you'll want it to go the distance.

While wigs are pretty low maintenance, there’s a misconception that a simple routine of shampoo, conditioner, wide-tooth comb, and a wig cap will ‘do’.

If you’re planning to wear your wig frequently, the good news is, there are a few easy, extra things you can do to keep yours looking a cut above the rest!

What is your wig made from?

Wigs may be made from different materials such as synthetic or human hair. Generally, synthetic wigs are more affordable and easier to maintain, while human hair wigs offer a more natural look and feel - but do require more upkeep.

It’s important to know how to care for your particular wig, including storing it properly, washing it regularly, and handling it gently to prevent damage.

How should I wash my wig?

Only use products designed for wigs. Regular haircare products contain chemicals that could damage your wig, so it’s important to use a wig shampoo and conditioner specially formulated to clean fibres gently and thoroughly. You'll be amazed at how they can revitalise a tired-looking wig, and extend the life of it too!
Wash regularly. How frequently depends on how often you wear it. If you wear your wig all day we recommend washing after 6-8 wears; if you only wear it for a few hours each time, you don't need to wash as often. (In fact, over washing and handling can also lessen the life of the wig). For human hair wigs, add in a regular deep conditioning treatment to keep it soft and manageable.
Never rub, twist, or wring! Nooo! This will only damage the delicate construction. Gently wash your wig under cool, running water, carefully working the solution through with your fingers. Then, pat it dry with a towel and hang it on a wig stand to air-dry.

Tips for brushing

Use a wide tooth comb or wig brush. Regular brushes and combs are too harsh – they could damage your wig permanently, even causing hair to fall out (eek!). A metal comb is a great option that detangles while de-frizzing, or a comb with wide teeth for added volume.
Regular brushing. Knots be-gone! Like hair, your wig should be brushed daily.

What about styling?

Spritz with a spray bottle. Fill your bottle with clean, cool water and use it to revive the strands. This makes styling a breeze.
Avoid heat. Apply a heat protectant spray before styling your wig to avoid heat damage, and never, ever use a curling iron or blow dryer! These could damage - even melt - a synthetic wig, and make human hair wigs permanently frizzy, brittle and dry. Instead, use your trusty spray bottle or a conditioning spray. We don't generally recommend mousse as it has an alcohol base which will dry the fibres.
Regular trims. For human hair wigs, trim the ends regularly to prevent split ends.

A lace front wig can be styled away from the face because the wig cap is not seen, giving the wearer more versality when styling and also a very realistic look. There’s no need for a fringe, and you can also pull back the hair or tuck it behind your ears.
